Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators, or SARMs, are a class of therapeutic compounds that have similar anabolic (muscle-building) properties to anabolic steroids but are designed to be more selective in their action.
What Are They?
In simple terms, your body has androgen receptors in various tissues, like muscles, bones, and also in organs like the prostate and liver. Traditional anabolic steroids activate all these receptors, leading to both desired effects (muscle growth) and a host of negative side effects (e.g., prostate enlargement, liver damage, acne).
SARMs are designed to selectively target only the androgen receptors in muscle and bone tissue. The goal is to provide the benefits of steroids—such as increased muscle mass, improved bone density, and enhanced physical performance—while minimizing the unwanted androgenic side effects.
Common SARM Product Names
SARMs are typically sold as research chemicals, not for human consumption, and are often found in liquid form or capsules. Some of the most well-known compounds include:
Ostarine (MK-2866, GTx-024): Often considered a beginner SARM, it’s known for its mild nature, promoting muscle preservation and modest gains.
Ligandrol (LGD-4033): Known for being one of the more potent SARMs for significant muscle mass and strength gains.
Testolone (RAD-140): A very potent SARM that is popular for its strong anabolic effects and is often compared to traditional steroids in its effectiveness.
Andarine (S-4): One of the older SARMs, used for fat loss and muscle hardening.
Cardarine (GW-501516): Important Note: While often grouped with SARMs, Cardarine is not actually a SARM. It is a PPARδ receptor agonist, marketed for endurance and fat loss.
Important Considerations and Warnings
It is crucial to understand that SARMs are not approved by the FDA for treating any medical condition, only healthy sportsmen or fitness addicts may use them. But beware that they are banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and most major sports organizations.
